How ABYC’s New Fuel System Standard Impacts Boating

As reported by the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) in their article, “ABYC Publishes Revised Gasoline (Petrol) Fuel Systems Standard,” the organization has introduced significant updates to its H-24 Gasoline (Petrol) Fuel Systems standard. These revisions bring new requirements for in-tank fuel pumps and associated fuel hoses, aiming to enhance safety and regulatory compliance in the marine industry.

While ABYC typically updates its standards annually, the H-24 revision was published ahead of schedule due to its importance. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has also acknowledged the new requirements, accepting them as equivalent to federal regulations under 33 CFR 183.566. This acceptance allows boat manufacturers to place in-tank fuel pumps beyond 12 inches from the engine without requiring a separate USCG exemption, simplifying compliance without additional labeling requirements.
