As detailed by ASTM International in their publication “Standard Specification for Flame Mitigation Devices on Portable Fuel Containers,” new performance requirements have been established for flame mitigation devices (FMDs) used in containers for gasoline, diesel, and kerosene. These devices are designed to prevent flame propagation into a flammable fuel-air mixture inside the container. Click here to read the full article.
Flame mitigation devices are now a critical component in portable fuel containers (PFCs) color-coded for specific fuels—red for gasoline, yellow for diesel, and blue for kerosene. Under certain conditions, such as low temperatures and low liquid levels, a flammable mixture can form inside a container. Research, including work from Gardiner et al. and Elias et al., has shown that these circumstances can lead to dangerous situations without adequate protection.
